Players At The Game Of People

I don't prefer, and I don't despise Human for a Race in an RPG.

The capital H and R are used deliberately because this kind of creature in most MMORPGs is (according to whatever The Story may be) as fantastical, as different from the mundane, as alien in its way as all the myriad of Elf kinds, Dwarves and other Shorties, Big Uglies, and Other are when compared to the RL species to which all players belong. The baked-in differences are only, at best, more subtle. If nothing else, I look around and the heroic Human-oid type that is the standard avatar for the Race in most games is notably rare in Real Life.
Clichéd but true and overheard IRL:

  • Normally-Dressed to Oddly-Dressed Person: "Why are you wearing this costume?"
  • Oddly-Dressed Person to Normally-Dressed Person: "Why are you pretending you're not wearing one?"
Insightful guildmates past have commented truthfully (and played out the best examples of which I know, to prove it) that to adopt a "human" persona not your own and roleplay it, or to try to simulate a human but alien society and belief system can be more of a challenge to the imagination than it is to play pretend at being something else entirely. Often, after all, everyone knows how a ____ (fill in name of non-Human Race) is supposed to act.
  • Corollary: and the majority of those who play Whatever It Is will play it against type-- in other words, be a .

If the differences are only in pixels, then it hardly matters, and can be more of a challenge (and therefore, in some sense, more fun) to build a useful, powerful (and possibly colourful) character out of vanilla humanity.
  • But... but... I like seeing myself in tusks. In the past, I've even had a sneaking fondness for long ears or lekku. It's all equally good and equally silly.

If the lore, setting, rationale, plot, theme, possibilities and potential victory conditions are a lot different than real life, then to assume the rôle of or pretend to be a Human from some other kind of world is as much a stretch, in a slightly different set of directions, as it is to really, really get into playing a Troll.

Be a simple
Kind of man
Be something
You love and understand...

-- Lynyrd Skynyrd
On the other hand, I really enjoyed this take:

I only pick Human if there are no other interesting (to me) ones to choose. I play a Human everyday so when I MMO game I tend to step away from that.

TERA Tetas

I know where most of the people viewing this banner will be looking. Or focusing. Whatever else it does or does not offer, TERA must be applauded for keeping the fantasy in their MMO.

Mortal Online hasn't really raised the bar on this kind of thing, as full frontal nudity is not as compelling as near-nudity or déshabillé.

[15:46] <[IX]Lerdoc> do you know a single American that tolerates any form of nudity?

[15:46] <[IX]Lerdoc> they all seem to follow Amish culture on this one

[15:48] <[MOR]Cylox> yea like they flipped out when they saw mass effect "nude scenes" :/

[15:48] <[MOR]Cylox> its okay to shoot someone or cut his head off but never show some nudity .. never!

[15:48] <[WSX]Lepida_Nuykani|BUSY> I live not one hundred miles from places where people have been swimming nude for fifty years. (Not the same persons for all that time. If so, gosh, imagine the pruney wrinkles!) But, yeah.

...I have to wonder why this hasn't been done earlier.

I would also like the devs to explain why so many (promised before launch) features isn't implemented. I have no problems with the fact that they all weren't implemented, and I understand that there's a whole lot of technical considerations to each feature, but I would like an explanation, and perhaps a statement as to wether or not the features are planned for implementation in the future.

I also have to wonder. I will wonder even more, in the sense of "marvel", if Aventurine pulls off anything like redeeming itself. We shall see. Most of us from a distance.

Tasos!

The communication is good. For us the biggest problem is not knowing if our good suggestions will be implemented or not.

I remember Ztyx when he used to seem sane (maybe it was before he lived on Yssam). For his sake (and perhaps to keep him safely occupied away from Mortal Online), may Aventurine implement some good suggestions and keep Darkfall running. (And may he live to spawn another mount, once again. He may suffer from 'Sam flashbacks, but his zeal for relentless self-promotion has, over time, warmed the... parts... of my heart.)

With all the good will in the world, I cannot bring myself to trust the company, and perhaps not even the process, to change this game to make it one the Duchy of Wessex would go back to for a third time.

Welcome To The Jungle

[23:49] <[WSX]Lepida_Nuykani> I just know that, one of these days... I'm going to dream I'm playing Mortal Online, right? That is, as if I'm in the game but not aware of sitting / standing at the 'puta, doing it...

And then, suddenly, instead of being in Nave, I'm gonna be back in Yssam... listening to "All Along The Watchtower"....

[23:50] <Oromea|Tais> Lepida is just weird.

[23:51] <@kootenay> I agree Tais

[23:51] <[WSX]Lepida_Nuykani> Wake up sweating and shaking, having to think about my Happy Jungle PvP place...

[23:51] <[AI]BaurusJA> I had a day dream where a picture of me hitting Zarithas with a beat stick was on repeat in my mind

[23:52] <Oromea|Tais> 'Happy Jungle PvP place...' lol

[23:52] <[AI]BaurusJA> nah I just made that up

but it would be cool if I did have such a dream

I would probably feel disgusted with myself afterwards

[23:52] * [WSX]Lepida_Nuykani closes her eyes and imagines being in the Stranglethorns, listening to artistDonovan's First There Is A Mountain" while /shouting "Colonel Kurzen... He dead!"

I happen to like fighting in jungles. Can't help it.
(List expanded with the aid of Allakhazam and Thottbot, because I may have forgotten more about EverQuest and World of Warcraft than I still know:)

[23:56] <[AI]BaurusJA> STV? I have memories of STV

getting off the boat, having to fight because alliance always roamed around and bothered people in STV

getting lost in the fucking jungle

it was a mess

[23:57] <[WSX]Lepida_Nuykani> The Horror... The Horror.

[23:57] <[AI]BaurusJA> but a lot of fun

The Nature of Reality, and Marriage

[13:20] <[WSX]Lepida_Nuykani|AFK> Yes, that's the nature of reality. When you stop paying attention to it or believing in it, it nevertheless does not go away.

"Go Away, Go Play WoW" -- What about POST NO BILLS?

Post No Bills.Image by Gregalicious via Flickr
Heavy Metal wrote, in "Stop Telling Players To Go Away And Play WoW": Lets start focusing on getting more people to play, as opposed to sending the ones who want to play and are whining about the game, away.

MO needs more publicity...'
I will agree with this part of the OP as well as the title. Those are the important ideas, and the rest is immaterial whether anyone agrees with it or not.

The "Go 'Way-- Go Play WoW" sign outside the Mortal Online forums tree-fort is looking tacky and weathered, and the attention that so many people are paying to what other games people play or might play is wasted; better spent elsewhere even if they find the results amusing.

(Zen Lesson, Additional:  And, everyone (from some other's point of view) 'whines'.  How anyone can whine about the fact that people whine is just absurdity overload to me.  It's a given.  No one ever stopped anyone from doing it in this kind of arena without consequences: The Internet.  The only way not to add to the sum of whining here is not to pay it attention when others do; just give your own opinion and relax.  Now, drop and give me 20 deep breaths.)

In the spirit of that statement, let's encourage publicising Mortal Online in more and different places, because, face it: these forums are a car wreck that it's hard to extract information from without getting sick to one's stomach¹, despite a lot of good folks' best efforts.

¹ I love this metaphor and want to have its babies; sorry. Baurus has said stuff 15x worse, anyway.

Baurus's Anti-Goon Point of the Day

Vaguely related through the subject of propaganda, but isn't it cool? No longer to be found at Wikipedia.

[22:22] <[AI]BaurusJA> When someone as smart as Mittens is as admitting this:
[22:22] <[AI]BaurusJA> It is also possible to ruin a propaganda vector to the point that any hostile messages are lost in the static; years ago, the primary EVE forum was unequivocally dominated by Band of Brothers and their allied entities, until Goonswarm ditched the aforementioned forum ban and proceeded to deliberately drag the level of discourse down to that of a flailing, mentally deficient five-year-old
[22:23] <[AI]BaurusJA> Someone as dumb as barrell will follow, full head of steam no questions asked
[22:23] <[AI]BaurusJA> you gotta have people believing in your shit to just come out and say it lol
[22:23] <[AI]BaurusJA> and to not make your own players feel like morons

[22:24] <[AI]BaurusJA> Baurus's anti-goon point of the day
[22:25] <[AI]BaurusJA> :P xD

[22:29] haha I approve of this message

Medieval Fortification

Space between the inner and outer walls and pl...Image via Wikipedia

An external Pomoerium, stripped of bushes and building, gave defenders a clear view of what was happening outside and an unobstructed field of shot. An internal pomoerium gave ready access to the rear of the curtain wall to facilitate movement of the garrison to a point of need. By the end of the sixteenth century, the word had developed further in common use, into pomery.
All right, that's two words in one page that I have just never seen before.

Soloing In MMOs

For the greatest happiness for the most players, games should be designed to neither encourage soloing nor make it impossible.

I fail to see the point in grouping with people that one can barely stand, just for the sake of being in a group. Otherwise, it's a tradeoff between how hard the other people one would group with are to get along with, and how much in the game can be accomplished without a group; everyone makes that tradeoff according to how much or how little they can stand of what kind of behaviour vs. how badly they want to achieve a particular goal in a game.

Some folks are just not worth exposing oneself to if whatever one wants to do can be done later with someone else, or by oneself entirely, or if it can just be skipped. However, that's about the only time that a group wouldn't be welcome to me. I don't want the MMO game to make me and everyone else totally independent. I don't want to skip things, if that can be avoided.

Given that and taking it into account, there are times when the way I want to do things wouldn't suit most groups or schedules, and in those cases I wouldn't expect to find an interested group to go with me, but would still want to go do something. There are all kinds of good or tolerable reasons why, on occasion, I or anyone else might want to solo-- even if those occasions for some of us would be few and far between.

The best point I can make is that there's only one really bad reason to want to solo in an MMORPG, and that has nothing to do with the lack of time or of congenial or competent people to group with, nor with problems of pacing and lack of mutual interest, nor varying appetite for repetition. The bad reason would be that one preferred other people to not be real because, in Real Life, one thought of oneself as the only real person, anyhow. That's a good thumbnail definition of what used to be (very usefully) called a sociopath.

I am sure from how they act that some players who are soloing are doing so very much for that reason-- but not most of them. (Given that most of the heavy soloers I've known were nevertheless in a guild with me, my reckoning could happily be skewed on that point.)

I am happy for any of you who as players have never known anyone that you wished would only solo and never try to go out with a group because he was only able to act as if everyone else 'around' him was a non-person, but I would guess that there are few who have not.

------------------

  • "Wanting to solo" wouldn't include soloing while gold-farming, by the way. People who take that job are almost certainly not doing much of what they want to, and probably are doing a lot of things that most of us wouldn't want to do, because they have to. I am happy for them that they are not in a garment sweatshop, instead, and will save my indignation for the people who buy the gold.
  • Some people-- raised by media in the absence of parents-- 'do' sociopathy as a hobby, just for the lulz. They find many sources.
